Rehearsal Director

Gary Lambert

Trained at the Royal Ballet School, Gary worked with the Royal Ballet whilst a student and then as a graduate. In 1983 he joined London Festival Ballet where he danced for two years working with the likes of Glen Tetley, Alvin Ailey and Sir Frederick Ashton before moving on to Rambert Dance Company. Whilst with Rambert he worked with Richard Alston, Merce Cunningham, Ian Spink, Robert North, Michael Clarke, Christopher Bruce, Lucinda Childs, Siobhan Davies, Ashley Page, David Gordon with whom he received national and international acclaim for his performances as a dancer. In addition to this he began choreographing and made works for Rambert, Phoenix Dance Company, where he was also Assistant Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Company for two years, English National Ballet, Scottish Dance Theatre, Ricochet Dance Company, Tambuka and The National Contemporary Dance Company of Zimbabwe, with work also presented at The Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta 1996.

1992 also saw Gary establish his company Small Axe for which he received acclaim at the International choreographic competition in Groningen 1994, winning first prize. Gary’s independent roles such as, choreographer, teacher and performer have led him to projects and collaborations with the likes of Laurie Booth, Hans Peter Kuhn and Art Angel. In 1999 Gary presented XXL an original site-specific work at the Arches, funded by the Tramway, Glasgow in collaboration with DJ’s Dave Clarke and Carl Cox. “Degree’s of Freedom”, his latest solo work is an original commission by Morag Deyes Edinburgh Dance Base, for the Edinburgh festival in 2004. That same year Gary was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Dance at Laban, where he teaches Cunningham based technique, choreography and performance projects.
